Is anyone still paying attention?
I've noticed OGPs are few-and-far-between these days, and when they do go up they're quick and dirty, it's the 5th inning, and nobody comments.
I myself have pretty much stopped checking the score during the game, usually, and wait to get reports of the latest 3-0 loss the next morning.
I'm actually a little depressed and emo about it. Here I was six weeks ago all stoked for an awesome summer of baseball, and now I'm clinging desperately to the Pistons as long as I can and bracing myself for another 1993-2005-style Chase for .500! until college football rolls around.
Except this time it's different. Back before 2006, a loss was a loss and a win was nice. Now, a loss hurts. It hurts because there's no way in normal space-time that this team should not be hitting. Yeah, maybe the pitching was never going to be great, but how could it be this bad? Why all the walks? How is Justin Verlander, he of the no-hitter and Cy Young potential going into the season, tied with Barry Zito for the most losses by a starting pitcher in the Major Leagues?!?! How are Granderson, Polanco, Cabrera, Sheffield, Pudge and Renteria (6/8ths of our alleged "Murderer's Row") hitting a combined .251!?! A quarter of the way through the season!?!
It's not like these guys are all 22 year old studs who tore it up at Oneonta, Erie and Toledo. These are guys will serious All-Star, some of them definite or potential Hall of Fame, cred. Is there a starting lineup in baseball with more combined All Star appearances? I'm not doing the math, but they're certainly in the top-3.
It . Just. Doesn't. Make. Sense.
If it weren't for the 'Stons, man... Keep me away from toasters and bathtubs. That's all I'm saying.
