thecrazedhermit.livejournal.comI'm pretty much ready to close up shop on the 2008 season. So let's talk a bit about what's happening between now and next March.
Personally, I'm 96% sure Leyland's coming back. I'm pretty okay with that, although I definitely got tired of his "they're pros, what can I do?" schtick. You're the skipper, Jim, I thought that meant you could do something.
What about the rotation? I can say with certainty that we'll have Verlander, Bonderman and Galarraga there. Who are the other two? Willis will get another shot. I imagine Robertson will stay around. But what if Willis can't find it? Personally, I think Robertson's best years are behind him. We've seen his best work. Nor can we count on Freddy Garcia. What's the prognosis on Rogers? I'm hearing he probably won't be back. Presuming that's the case, I think that basically have to sign a free agent, and the fifth guy comes from Willis-Robertson-Garcia. Do they make a run at Sabathia? Lackey? What other free agent starters are out there? Seems like there are options out there, for a price. And I'd rather grab a known commodity on the open market than hope that two of the above three find it. Espeically with Galarraga going into his sophomore season and Bonderman recovering from the blood clot.
As to position players, I'm presuming Inge is our catcher (ugh) and I guess we've got Cabrera-Polanco-Guillen penciled in. I understand Renteria is a FA. I'm guessing they let him go. Across the outfield, Ordonez and Granderson are locks, what happens in left? I'm sure Sheffield is gone, does Thames start everyday, or one of the Toledo boys? I can't imagine they'll spend big bucks on a bat this offseason. I feel like the pitching the real problem.
Which brings us to the bullpen. Ugh. I have to believe everyone in the orgainization knows a couple things by now: 1) nothing less than a total overhaul is needed and 2) neither Rodney nor Zumaya can really be depended on going forward. What do they do? I feel like they make a run a K-Rod. They almost have to. Seay stays around, but other than that, who?
So, a half-hour's worth of brain droppings. Any thoughts, Tiger Nation?
