I have a friend who is currently living down in Lakeland. (Can we say road trip for Spring Training!!!)

Obviously she gets the Tampa feed for any games she gets to watch. She said that at one point last week someone started warming up in the bullpen.

One of the announcers commented "And it looks like they've got Fernando Rodney warming up down there. Oh, wait, that's Freddi Dolsi. I guess Detroit does have more than one black pitcher."

Did anyone else hear this? Thoughts?

It's flippant and unprofessional, but I don't know if it qualifies as offensive.

I'd classify the comment as racially insensitive, considering neither Dolsi nor Rodney are black. There's something about lumping players of color under one umbrella "label" (an inaccurate label at that) that strikes me as insensitive and potentially offensive.

I can agree with that.

I think the only difference between an ignorant and offensive remark is intent.

Let's face it, to someone who doesn't know any better, they could pass for black. So could Edgar Renteria.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and just call them stupid and unprofessional.

Outrageous!

Now we've got some great billboard material for the ALDS! Revenge will be...

Oh, wait.

Very unprofessional.
Very uncalled for.
It makes them sound ignorant.

Very unprofessional, and very, very stupid, especially since Fernando and Dolsi are INCREDIBLY EASY to tell apart even from a pretty huge distance... it's not like they're comparably built, Dolsi is normal height and skinny, Fernando is short and kinda chunky.
